The pearls are opaque brown and not red as in the photo. However, their quality and finish are beyond reproach. Depending on the reflections, the color changes slightly to a very dark red. So I was disappointed at first, but rather pleased in the end. It's true that carnelian varies in hue from orange to red to brown. The color was not specified at the time of ordering.
