Amethyst geode formation
Amethyst geodes are formed by the hydrothermal process, when a silicic acid solution containing a small amount of iron seeps into volcanic rock cavities. It is only when ionizing radiation emanating from the surrounding rocks is present that this quartz takes on its violet color.
