Angelite is a variety of blue Anhydrite, a mineral composed of calcium sulfate. Its name comes from the Greek anhudros, meaning "without water". Evaporation of salt water forms evaporites - the group of minerals to which this stone belongs - changing their volume in the process. Gypsum is thus transformed into Anhydrite.
