Mineralogy of Amazonite

Amazonite, a member of the tectosilicate group, is a variety of microcline, a potassium feldspar with the chemical formula KAlSi₃O₈.

It forms in granitic pegmatites resulting from the final stages of magma crystallization.

It crystallizes in the triclinic system and exhibits perfect cleavage in two directions at 90° to each other. Its luster ranges from vitreous to pearly, and it can be translucent to opaque.

Its color, which can be green, blue-green, or turquoise, is due to the presence of lead (Pb²⁺) in the crystal structure, and sometimes traces of copper. Divalent iron may also play a role.

High-quality amazonite is found in the United States (Colorado and Virginia, particularly the Morefield Gem Mine), in Russia (the Ilmensky Mountains, a historic source), and and Ethiopia, China, Australia, Sweden and South Africa.

Its hardness is 6.0–6.5 on the Mohs scale. Its density is 2.56–2.58.
