Heliotrope is also known as bloodstone or blood jasper. It falls between the Jasper and Chalcedony families and belongs to the Quartz and Oxide groups. It is a silicon dioxide containing aluminum, iron, magnesium, potassium and bohrium, formed secondarily when soil erosion releases silicic acid, which gradually solidifies to become Chalcedony and silicate iron, magnesium and iron oxide impregnate the already thickened silica.
Its microcrystalline and fibrous crystals are not visible to the naked eye and its color is dark green with red spots.
Did you know?
Heliotrope is often accompanied by areas of Chalcedony and Moss Agate, as the elements that make it up often mix incompletely.
The history of Heliotrope
Its name, Heliotrope, comes from the Greek and means " turned towards the sun". It is also nicknamed Hildegarde Jasper in honor of Hildegarde de Binden, who wrote extensively about the benefits of this stone 1,000 years ago.
Heliotrope is a healing stone that has been known for thousands of years to cure all kinds of illnesses, particularly blood diseases, infections and inflammations.
Over 3,000 years ago, in Babylon, the power of Heliotrope was used to crumble walls and defeat enemies and according to popular belief, this stone also had the power to control the climate.
As with Red Jasper, in Christian myths, Heliotrope is linked to the blood of Christ at the crucifixion.
