Diopside is formed mainly by contact metamorphism of different sediments, sometimes of primary formation. It is a and silicate of the pyroxene group containing calsium, magnesium and silica, with traces of chromium, iron, manganese, zinc, fluorine, sodium, titanium and vanadium.
Chromium diopside forms in peridotites and gets its green color from the chromium.

It sometimes forms crystals in alpine cracks, but is more often found as coarse aggregates. It can sometimes have a cat's-eye effect.
