Meaning and symbol

The origin of its name comes from the Greek "epidosis", meaning "increase".

Epidote is linked to notions of growth and a strong connection with nature. It invites you to come to terms with and accept the natural time it takes for any action to reach the desired moment.

Waiting is not made of emptiness: knowing how to wait is knowledge.

It's with complete objectivity that you can draw up an effective strategy to achieve your goals. With this stone, reflection and your feelings can be reconciled; they will help you to favour a practical mindset, which will help you to see things in their entirety.

There's a path from repressed emotion to serenity. Epidote supports you along this path to overcome your fears and blockages.

You'll need to move forward without retreating as soon as an obstacle presents itself; and without placing yourself as a victim as soon as a situation calls for change. The stone introduces you to the art of patience, encouraging you to stay focused on your goals when making decisions.

Epidote's amplifying virtues will free your emotions and promote spiritual growth by intensifying positive energies, which are beneficial to creative actions - such as meditation and concentration. Global awareness often translates into new resilience and a calmer approach to life's inherent conflicts.

Mineralogy

Epidote is a mineral belonging to the sorosilicate group, consisting mainly of calcium, aluminum and iron, with traces of manganese and magnesium.

Its unique crystalline structure and optical properties, such as birefringence (an optical property of certain crystalline materials which causes light to split into two distinct rays when passing through them), make it a special stone for geologists and mineralogists.

It forms mainly in low- to medium-pressure metamorphic environments. Crystals can range in hue from green to brown, transparent, gray, grayish-white, greenish-black, yellowish, red and black.

Epidote is found all over the world - in metamorphic and sometimes igneous rocks: in the European Alps, Norway, USA, Canada, Africa (Kenya and South Africa), Asia (Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka), Australia.

Epidote has a hardness of between 6 and 7 on the Mohs scale: it is relatively hard and scratch-resistant.
