What are the properties and benefits of Fire Opal in lithotherapy?
Origins and symbols
Transparent to translucent, with fiery hues ranging from bright yellow to orange-red, this variety of Opal was not known in Europe before the discovery of America.
The first scientific description of Fire Opal dates back to the early XIXᵉ century, when chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth analyzed specimens brought back from Mexico as part of Alexander von Humboldt's Latin American expedition.
Long before this discovery, Opals had been known and appreciated in ancient Europe, but these were common or noble varieties, probably originating in Central Europe or Turkey.
The conquistadors brought the exceptionally fine Mexican Fire Opal back to Europe from the 16ᵉ century onwards. It immediately enjoyed remarkable success, not only in the world of fine jewelry, but also with writers and scientists.
Fire opal is specific to certain Mexican deposits (Querétaro, Zimapán). The ancient Aztec civilization venerated Fire Opal as a sacred stone.
The Aztecs called it Quetzalitzlipyollitli, meaning the stone of the bird of paradise, a group of different bird species with powerful symbolism linked to divine beauty, freedom and sacred power. The stone played an important role in various rituals and was inlaid in numerous statuettes and jewels.
Contemporary esotericism thus perpetuates the symbols that the Aztecs attributed to Fire Opal, associated with sacred fire, vitality, love and spiritual protection.
Like all Opals, in the West it is also the birthstone of the month of October.
Meaning and spiritual virtues
In lithotherapy, by stimulating joy, spontaneity and enthusiasm, Fire Opal awakens vital energy and promotes creativity.
Its distinctive aura is the result of the marriage of the energies of water and fire, elements which, each in their own way, are great purifiers.
Water is the movement of your emotions, fire is your life force, your vital energy. The stone can help you work out whatever is preventing you from expressing yourself or moving through your emotions in a healthy way.
By reinforcing the unimpeded circulation of vital energies, it leads you to question any rigidity that freezes and encysts your internal structures. This can be disconcerting, destabilizing or even upsetting, but in the end, it's life-saving.
The weight of habit, stagnation and repetition is an obstacle to self-knowledge. The stone's energy can help you rediscover a zest for life and your innate joy. The flame shining in your eyes is a spark of life to be rediscovered and released.
Fire Opal is a reminder, especially to shy or insecure people, of the vitality of an existence that welcomes spontaneity, enthusiasm and passion. Admittedly, it can be an impulsive, sometimes explosive ally, but moderation in all things, properly understood, in no way stands in the way of pleasure, discovering what makes you tick or ecstasy!
It's hardly surprising, then, that Fire Opal is said to have beneficial effects on self-confidence and sexuality. By inviting you to put aside your routine, to rid yourself once and for all of fears, paralyzing beliefs and inhibitions, it promotes a more harmonious relationship with your body and emotions.
The power to experience all facets of a fulfilling sex life also involves making peace with the past and putting any traumas in their place. Fire Opal can accompany you on a journey to heal wounds related to your libido, to leave behind experiences with an abusive partner, miscarriage, difficult childbirth or obstetric violence.
On a physical level
On a physical level, its use is not a scientific matter, but is based on energetic and traditional practices. It can purify body fluids, stimulate hormone production in the adrenal glands and sexual organs, help regulate the menstrual cycle, soothe premenstrual syndromes and menstrual pain. Or to facilitate childbirth and promote fertility. It is also said to improve skin hydration and elasticity, and have a positive effect on appetite and convalescence.

Mineralogy of Fire Opal
Fire Opal is a variety of noble Opal belonging to the oxide class, a silicon oxide containing iron oxide and up to 20% water.
Transparent to translucent, its color is due to its iron oxide content and the particular structure of its inclusions. It ranges from almost colorless yellow through orange to deep red.
Like all opals, it has no defined crystalline structure, and is therefore considered a mineraloid and than a mineral in the strict sense.
Made up of hydrated silica, it is formed from the silica-rich magmatic liquids found in volcanic rocks - by hydrothermal processes, the absorption of iron oxide and the accumulation of microscopic spheres of silica.
The best-known deposits are in Mexico, but also in Ethiopia, Brazil, Australia, the United States and Madagascar.
Its hardness is between 5.5 and 6.5 on the Mohs scale - it's a stone that can be scratched by Quartz or Ruby. which we recommend above in combination with Fire Opal.. Handle with care!
