Fuchsite mineralogy: composition, formation and particularities

Also known as mica-chrome, green mica or green muscovite, Fuchsite is a chromiferous mica belonging to the mineral class of lamellar silicates.

It contains potassium, aluminum, chromium, bohrium, fluorine and silica, with traces of calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, sodium and titanium.

It may be of primary or tertiary formation, forming dense masses of superimposed strata or thick lamellae.

Its green color comes from chromium, giving it a pearly sheen or a strong sparkle.

Fuchsite is found mainly in Russia, India, Brazil, Zimbabwe and the Alps.

Other known varieties of micas are Biotite (very dark brown, black, dark green, copper), Lepidolite (violet, mauve, violet-blue) and Muscovite (colorless, white, yellow, pink, violet).

When a quartz has Fuchsite inclusions, it is a green Aventurine (formerly called Quartz-Aventurine).

Fuchsite's hardness on the Mohs scale is between 2 and 3: it is a soft stone to be handled with care - it can easily be scratched.
