Created by the impact of lightning on soil, sand or rock, Fulgurite is a mineral formation like no other, whose chemical composition varies according to the materials present at the impact site.
Lightning strikes at extremely high temperatures - up to 30,000 degrees Kelvin - and the impact melts and vitrifies the silicas at the point of contact. One kelvin is equivalent to one degree Celsius, but starts at absolute zero, i.e. -273.15°C.
This action forms tubes or branched structures of natural glass, composed mainly of lechatelierite, an amorphous form of silica.
