EarthGabbro mineralogy
Making up a large part of the oceanic crust, Gabbro is a basalt, an intrusive igneous rock formed by the slow cooling of magma beneath the earth's surface - which explains its coarser texture than that of other basalts.
It consists mainly of calcium-rich plagioclase and pyroxene, with occasional traces of olivine and hornblende.
Its hardness lies between 6 and 6.5 on the Mohs scale - it's a fairly hard stone, used in construction, jewelry, and as an ornament.
