Gedrite mineralogy
Gedrite was first discovered in 1836 in the Héas valley, near Gèdre, in the Hautes-Pyrénées region of France.
It is also found in Sweden, the United States and Norway, in localities associated with geological environments where medium- to high-grade metamorphic processes may have taken place.
This stone belongs to the ferromagnesian amphibole group. Its optical properties, such as moderate pleochroism and vitreous luster, are unique.
It can be found in association with minerals such as garnet, cordierite and quartz.
Its orthorhombic crystal structure and hardness of 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale make it a relatively solid stone.
