Gem Silica is an unusual variety of Chalcedony. Its blue-green color is due to the presence of silicon dioxide, copper and Chrysocolla inclusions in its chemical structure.

It forms in geological sites rich in copper; it is often found near Malachite and Azurite in the USA, Mexico and Peru.

Its hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale makes it a resistant stone for jewelry.
