Land and waterMineralogy of Heliotrope
Heliotrope is also known as Bloodstone Jasper. It lies between the Jasper and Chalcedony families - and belongs to the quartz and oxide groups. It is a silicon dioxide containing aluminum, iron, magnesium, potassium and bohrium. It is formed secondarily when soil erosion releases silicic acid, which gradually solidifies to become chalcedony, and when silicate iron, magnesium and iron oxide become impregnated into the already thickened silica.
Its microcrystalline and fibrous crystals are not visible to the naked eye, and its color is dark green with red spots.
Did you know?
Heliotrope is often accompanied by areas of Chalcedony and Moss Agate, as the elements that make it up often mix incompletely.
This stone is found in India, Brazil, Australia and the United States.
Its hardness on the Mohs scale ranges from 6.5 to 7.
