This is a variety of quartz of exceptional clarity, dating back approximately 500 million years.

It differs from other quartz crystals in that it forms inside cavities—which explains its unique structure: a two-part formation, with its ends featuring up to 18 faces.

Crystals may also contain inclusions of organic matter, gases, or liquids, depending on the conditions under which they formed.

Herkimer diamonds come from the dolomite of the Little Falls Formation in Herkimer County in the United States—but there are deposits of similar crystals elsewhere in the world, including China, Brazil, Germany, and France.

Its hardness is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale—it is a very hard mineral.
