Jade mineralogy
Jade jadeite and jade nephrite are the two main varieties of jade.
Jadeite is composed of sodium and aluminum silicate, while nephrite jade is a calcium and magnesium silicate.
Jadeite is rarer. Its vivid colors, ranging from emerald green to lavender, are often the most prized. It is found mainly in Burma.
Nephrite is more common. Its shades range from off-white to dark green. Found in Canada, China and Russia.
