EtherMagnesite in mineralogy
Magnesite belongs to the Calcite-Dolomite-Aragonite family of carbonates. It is a magnesium carbonate that may contain traces of iron, manganese and calcium.
White, yellowish or grayish-white in color, Magnesite is mainly the result of 3 different geological processes: alteration of magnesium-rich rocks by carbonate waters; metamorphism; metasomatosis of limestones.
It most often occurs as granular aggregates and more rarely as trigonal rhombohedral crystals.
Did you know? Although similar in appearance and easily confused, Howlite and Magnesite are two different stones, contrary to what some books claim. Howlite is a calcium silicate, Magnesite a magnesium carbonate. They do not have the same therapeutic properties.
Magnesite is often dyed blue or blue-green and sold under the name Turquoise or Chrysocolla. Don't be fooled! Magnesite artificially dyed blue is called "Turquenite".
The history of Magnesite
Its name comes from the Latin magnes, after the hills of Magnesia in Thessaly. Its history is difficult to trace because, until 1808, when magnesium was identified, Magnesite was often confused with lime.
It is used as a raw material for insulating materials such as firebricks, for pharmaceutical products and in sport, in the gym or in climbing to prevent slippery hands.
