Mineralogy of Moss Agate
It has a translucent to semi-translucent matrix, with no bands, which distinguishes it from classic agates. Moss agate is a variety of chalcedony belonging to the cryptocrystalline quartz group (SiO₂).
It is hydrothermal in origin and mainly of silicon dioxide. It forms mainly in volcanic rocks (basalt, andesite) or cavities or fractures where silica-rich solutions circulate, whose slow crystallization produces silica soils, then chalcedony.
Inclusions of green chlorite filaments give it its color and of containing moss. When it is adorned and ochre, red and , it is a sign that it contains traces of iron and manganese or magnesium, and oxidation process took place during its formation. It may also contain inclusions of hornblende.
Moss agate is found mainly and the United States, India, Poland and Armenia.
