Rainbow obsidian and celestial eye in mineralogy: composition, formation and particularities

Obsidian is an amorphous (non-crystalline) volcanic rock. It forms when lava cools rapidly and solidifies without having had time to crystallize.
Rainbow obsidian contains small, dispersed gas bubbles that diffuse and divide light into all the colors of the rainbow - which can be seen more or less intensely, depending on how the stone is polished.

Obsidian "celestial eyes" are cabochons or pebbles cut and polished so that the "rainbow" layers are clearly visible and give the appearance of an eye or other shapes such as hearts or butterflies. Those with pronounced blue or violet reflections are particularly sought-after.
