It forms in granitic pegmatites, coarse-grained igneous rocks resulting from the final stages of magma crystallization. Most often associated and spodumene, lepidolite and other lithium-bearing minerals, petalite is a lithium and phyllosilicate with the formula LiAlSi₄O₁₀.

It has a monoclinic crystal system with a density of approximately 2.4. It can be colorless, white, gray, yellow, or pink depending on the impurities in its composition, with a vitreous to pearly luster on the cleavage planes, which are lamellar and perfect on {001}. It is transparent to translucent.

It is found in several regions of the world, including Brazil, Zimbabwe, Sweden, Canada, and United States.

It is considered an alternative source of lithium.
