Psilomelane

Psilomelane in Mineralogy

Psilomelane most often occurs as nodular clusters, manganese dendrites mixed with other rocks (dendritic agate, for example, contains manganese dendrites), or as microcrystals. It is black in color with a metallic luster.

It is a hydrated manganese oxide that contains varying amounts of barium, calcium, magnesium, and zinc.

Did you know? Psilomelane is sometimes called "black malachite." Once polished, psilomelane can display patterns similar to those of malachite.

It is common to read that another name for psilomelane is “Merlinite,” which is not entirely accurate, since Merlinite is a nickname sometimes given to dendritic agate that contains manganese dendrites (and therefore psilomelane). The name Merlinite is also given to gabbro.
