Selenite in mineralogy
Selenite is a gypsum crystal whose prismatic or tabular crystals can reach several meters in size.
Gyspsum forms during the evaporation of salt lakes and is a hydrated calcium sulfate containing aluminum, iron and calcium. It is iron that gives some selenites their orange color.
Its hardness is very low, 1.5-2 on the Mohs scale, which means it scratches very easily.
