Brown Dravite contains aluminum, magnesium and sodium.
Chromdravite, a green tourmaline whose color is determined by its chromium content.
Feruvite is black in color and contains iron, calcium and aluminum.
Liddicoatite, a multicolored tourmaline with lithium, aluminum and calcium.
Uvite is brown with calcium, aluminum and magnesium.
Tsilaisite is a dark yellow Tourmaline containing sodium, manganese and aluminum.

Tourmalines are usually classified by color:
Idicolite for blue Elbaites
Verdelite for Tourmalines in various shades of green
Rubellite, originally used for red Elbaite, but now extended to pink Tourmalines.
Tourmaline melon d'eau or watermelon for Tourmaline crystals with pink cores and green exteriors, or vice versa.
Tourmaline de Parabaïa for rare blue Elbaite varieties containing copper
Achroite, for colorless or lavender-colored Elbaite
Siberite, a violet Tourmaline variety
To find out which variety a Tourmaline belongs to, for example whether a green Tourmaline is an Elbaite or a Chromedravite, the color alone is not enough, but the deposit from which it comes can give precious clues.
Tourmaline can be formed in four different ways:
From liquid magma, which crystallizes when the first feldspars are formed and the crystals can still expand. In this case, its constituent elements come exclusively from the magma.
By pegmatite formation, in this case, its composition is determined by the magma and by the minerals extracted from the surrounding rock by the hot magma.
By pneumatolytic formation, where boric acid vapors dissolve minerals from surrounding rocks and together form tourmaline.
By hydrothermal formation, where hot water leaches the surrounding rock, causing the minerals to dissolve in the liquid and crystallize as it cools.
A trigonal crystal system, Tourmaline forms long, rod-like crystals of varying thickness. The varieties that form the largest crystals are Black Tourmaline and Dravite. These crystals terminate asymmetrically or flat. Its crystal lattice is characterized by 3-sided prisms that form a structure whose elements are almost always multiples of 3.
Did you know?
Tourmaline has two very interesting properties:
Piezoelectricity, which means it becomes electrically polarized when subjected to stress such as shock or pressure and thus generates energy.
Pyroelectricity means that when a Tourmaline crystal is heated, its electrical charge changes, a positive charge is created and the stone attracts fine particles such as dust, ash, straw, etc. Moreover, Dutch sailors, the first importers of Tourmaline, used it to clean their pipes and some manufacturers of hair straightening irons include Tourmaline to avoid static electricity.
This property has earned it the nickname "the love of Ceylon".
