Mineralogy of White Calcite

White calcite is a calcium carbonate found mainly in sedimentary rocks such as limestone and marble, or in hydrothermal veins and cavities in igneous rocks, mostly associated with stalactite and stalagmite formations in caves.

It is called Iceland Spar when it is transparent and optical.

White calcite comes mainly from China, the USA and Mexico, which are major producers - but it can be found in many parts of the world.

Its hardness of 3 on the Mohs scale defines it as a relatively soft stone. It must be handled with care to avoid scratching it with harder minerals.
