Although its name is linked to a region of Thessaly, Magnesia, a Greek region where magnesium rock is very present, the origin of Magnesite is not easy to identify: in ancient times, it was easily confused with lime.
A product of hydrothermal alteration of ultramafic rocks or precipitation in magnesium-rich environments, magnesite is a magnesium carbonate that may contain traces of calcium and iron oxides, which give it its brown veins, and manganese oxides, which give it its black veins. Cobalt and nickel can sometimes modify its color.
It should not be confused with howlite. Similarly, it can be tinted blue or blue-green - in which case it is called "Turquenite".
It can be found in Austria, Germany, Slovakia, Brazil, the United States and China.
Its hardness on the Mohs scale ranges from 3.5 to 4.5.
