Emerald is a beryl that has been known for thousands of years. Its origins are varied (South America, Africa or Asia). Its green color is due to the chromium, vanadium and iron that can compose it - iron is not always present. Vitreous in appearance and rather hard (hardness 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale), its prismatic crystals range from translucent to transparent.
