Basalt is a volcanic rock composed mainly of silica and alkaline oxides, with occasional magnetite or quartz. Its texture is microlithic. It was formed by cooling in contact with air or water. Its porous form is due to the gases that were inside it when it solidified.
It will be black or more or less gray and crystalline depending on its composition, inclusions and impurities.
Opaque, glossy, terrestrial or oceanic, Basalt is quite resistant ( 5 / 6 on the Mohs scale).
Found all over the world - it's the most common mineral on earth - it's found mainly in volcanic areas.
