Natural Indian incense - agarbatti and ayurvedic in sticks, stems, bricks, cones backflow and coffrets
Indian incense, also known as agarbatti, is a natural product renowned for its high quality. Its roots are as much cultural as they are spiritual: in Buddhist, Hindu and Jain cults, the use of incense is an integral part of the path leading to the four goals of human life: Dharma (duty/ethics), Artha (wealth), Kama (desire) and Moksha (liberation).
The use of incense in India can be traced back to the Neolithic period - which took off around 10,000 years ago - and then expanded greatly during the Chalcolithic, the Copper Age, between 3300 and 1300 BC, a period marked by the unprecedented development of complex societies.
It is already mentioned in the oldest of the Vedas, the Rigveda (1500 to 1100 B.C.) or in other equally famous texts, such as the Atharva-veda (between 1000 and 800 B.C.). It talks of its use to burn odors and create perfumes in harmony with the Ayurvedic medical system. Incense ingredients such as camphor, sandalwood, aloe, saffron, musk and resins are also mentioned in the great epic poem Mahabharata and in major Sanskrit texts such as the Dharmaśāstra.
Fumigation and purification: incense plays an important role in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism, where it is used alongside flowers (puṣpa), lamps (dīpa) and offerings (nivedya).
The bamboo stick as a core for incense sticks first appeared in India towards the end of the 19th century, marking a major change in the way the product was shaped.
Today, India is the world's leading incense producer, with universally recognized products.
Agarbatti?
Agarbatti is another term for Indian incense. The word is composed of "Agar" (from the Sanskrit "Agaru", "light" in relation to the leaves of the incense tree) and "Batti" ("wick" in Hindi). The expression thus indicates an incense stick made from agarwood.
