What is a crystal bowl?

Crystal bowls are singing bowls, musical instruments and therapeutic tools in the form of bowls of various sizes, which are sung with a mallet or mallet. Made from pure quartz powder, tuned to specific notes and frequencies, they produce a crystalline sound, powerful vibrations and numerous energetic and therapeutic properties.

What is the manufacturing process?

No, crystal bowls are not carved from a huge block of quartz. Their manufacture is the fruit of a highly precise industrial procedure.

Silica powder: The birth of a Crystal Bowl begins with the extraction of Quartz blocks (Silica, the main constituent of Quartz, is the ingredient present in over 99% of a Crystal Bowl), which are then reduced to a very fine powder sorted of all impurities. This is a very important step, as impurities in the Quartz can impair the sound of the bowl.

Melting, from solid to liquid: This silica powder is then heated to very high temperatures in a kind of large, heated centrifuge, where it changes from solid to liquid while retaining its crystalline structure.

Bowl crystallization: During cooling, Silica crystallizes again and regains its solidity, this time in the form of a bowl. Various treatments, mainly thermal, are then applied to obtain the desired appearance and texture (frosted, transparent, colored). The bowl is then cleaned and cooled by sandblasting, before being removed from the mold and polished.

Finishing: Each bowl is then carefully inspected for sound and visual quality. After this stage, designs can be engraved or painted on the bowls.

Where do crystal bowls come from?

The origins of crystal bowls and a little hazy. They were originally silica crucibles used in the computer industry for their resistance to heat. I've yet to find a reliable source to tell me when (probably in the 1970s-1980s) and who had the ingenious idea of using them in the form of singing bowls with therapeutic benefits and developing their sounds for healing purposes.

What are the benefits of a crystal bowl?

The sounds, waves, frequencies and vibrations of the bowls resonate with every cell in our body and especially those containing oxygen and silicon. A genuine vibratory dialogue between the bowl and the bodies (physical and subtle) is established and gradually dissolving tensions and blockages while harmonizing energies.

Here is a non-exhaustive list of different benefits and uses of crystal bowls:

  • Harmonize the cerebral hemispheres, stimulate the pineal gland
  • Harmonize the subtle bodies, cleanse the aura and etheric body, rebalance the Chakras, dissolve energy blockages and promote meditative states, relaxation and release.
  • Improve the circulation of energy in the body
  • Cleanse an area of undesirable energies and raise its vibratory level
  • Reduce stress, promote relaxation and meditative states
  • Soothe sleep and concentration problems and any symptoms related to stress, difficult emotions or emotional shock.
  • Encourage intuition, daydreaming and creativity
  • Relieve physical pain
  • Feeling lighter, more open.
  • Emptying yourself, being in the present moment
  • Accompanying sacred songs

The virtues of a crystal bowl also come from its material, rock crystal, which is silicon dioxide. Silica captures and diffuses information. To find out more about the benefits of a crystal bowl in lithotherapy, you'll find plenty of additional information on this page: the virtues and properties of rock crystal in lithotherapy.

Notes and corresponding chakras

Depending on the note emitted by the bowl, it will, in principle, have a more sustained action on the chakra corresponding to that note, as each chakra has a specific resonance frequency. However, it would be a pity to remain "fixed" on this idea to the point of having a "mental" and "scholastic" approach to crystal bowls, as everyone's feelings and needs are different.

Chakras are spheres of energy located in many places on our subtle bodies. The 7 main chakras are connected directly to the central energy channel along our spine, and these interconnected spheres or wheels act as "gateways", allowing vital energy to enter and circulate within our bodies. When one or more chakras are out of balance, our entire energy system suffers.

A treatment with crystal singing bowls by a qualified therapist can help rebalance the chakras.

How to use a crystal bowl

Singing a crystal bowl is very simple and accessible to and . As with Tibetan singing bowls there are two possible techniques:

With a mallet: simply turn the mallet on the outer edge of the bowl at the very top, pressing lightly and the bowl will immediately begin to vibrate. You can then play with the sound by gently tapping the outer edge with the mallet.

With a mallet: the mallet is used to strike the outer edge of the bowl. Depending on its hardness, material and strike zone, the sound will be different.

The bowls rest on a rubber ring. If a bowl is placed without this ring, it vibrates directly on the floor. It can become brittle and the sound is less good. Smaller bowls can be hand-held or placed directly on a person's body. To hold a bowl in the hand, place it directly on the hand, laid flat (without the rubber ring and especially without the ring).

To use a crystal bowl in your daily life, for yourself, as a musical instrument or to guide a meditation, you don't need any special knowledge, just a little practice.

For therapeutic use on other people, we recommend that you first undergo training with a professional.

Tools and accessories

Indispensable accessories: rubber ring to place the bowl, rubber or suede mallet to make the bowl sing.

Complementary accessories: various types of mallets and storage and transport cases (crystal bowls are very fragile, so protection during storage and travel is highly recommended).

How to choose your crystal bowl?

It all depends on how you want to use it. You can choose it according to a note or frequency with which you have a certain affinity. Size is also an important criterion. The larger the bowl, the stronger the vibrations and the and lasting the sound.

Precautions for use and contraindication

There are no studies demonstrating any contraindications or negative side effects of crystal bowls. However, it is very important to use common sense, such as :

  • Avoid ringing loudly close to a person's ear
  • Do not play the role of "apprentice healer" by providing untrained sound treatments. By unblocking blockages, these instruments can generate very strong emotions, tremors or nausea in some people and it is necessary to have the therapeutic skills to properly accompany these people in the process they are going through.
  • Sound knowledge is essential for the use of crystal bowls with pregnant women, babies, people with serious physical or psychiatric conditions, or people with pacemakers.

Sonotherapy in no way replaces appropriate medical treatment for physical or psychological pathologies and

Caution! Crystal bowls are very fragile and must be handled with care. They must not be used by young children without adult supervision, placed on an unstable surface where they could fall, transported without protection, or struck or rubbed with unsuitable tools.

How do I clean a crystal bowl?

A crystal bowl is simply cleaned with water or baking soda and a non-abrasive cloth to avoid scratching. Avoid chemical or abrasive products.

How to purify a crystal bowl?

Composed of silica, crystal bowls store both "positive" and "negative" information, so it may sometimes be necessary to purify them of accumulated energies. It is possible to "smudge" them with white sage or other purifying plants under running water or placed in the wind or under the light of the full moon. Prayers and the power of intention are also very effective when the intention is clear.
