The process of hardening amber is known as polymerization, which makes it hard and solid. Its composition can vary according to its origin. Its color can range from yellow to pale brown or even black. Amber can also be translucent, or even blue in the Dominican Republic - a rare and unique hue caused by fluorescence. Amber sometimes contains inclusions such as insects or leaves, which considerably increase its value. Its hardness ranges from 2 to 2.5 on the Mohs scale and its density from 1.0 to 1.1. It can also burn if exposed to fire.
