Chalcedony is a Quartz, more precisely a microcrystalline and cryptocrystalline Quartz composed of silicon dioxide. This translucent stone was formed in magmatic or sedimentary soils, where infiltration of silicic acid triggered crystallization. Inclusions of different minerals account for its varied coloring: microscopic fibers give it a blue hue and manganese gives it a violet or lavender hue.
Hardness on the Mohs scale: 6 to 7 - a moderately hard mineral.
