Its mineralogy
Obsidian is a natural form of volcanic glass that forms when lava cools very rapidly and has no crystalline structure. The snowflake variety contains inclusions of cristobalite, a silica mineral, which give it its characteristic appearance of white or gray spots or patterns on a black background. Named after Cerro San Cristobal, Mexico, where it was first discovered, cristobalite is mainly mined in Utah, USA.
