Chalcedony in Mineralogy
Of the Quartz group, Chalcedony is a very large family of stones including Chrysoprase, Carnelian, Sardony, Moss Agate, Heliotrope, Sardonyx (for these stones, there's more information on the pages dedicated to them), Blue Chalcedony, Pink Chalcedony, White Chalcedony, Copper Chalcedony, Red Chalcedony, Plasma Chalcedony, Chromium Chalcedony, Dendritic Chalcedony and undoubtedly others that are little known or not yet discovered or studied.
Chalcedony, composed of silicon dioxide, is formed at low temperatures from silicic acid solutions of mainly magmatic, rarely sedimentary origin, which seep into cavities where they crystallize.
It is the various elements added in trace form to the silicic acid solution that create the different colors and varieties of chalcedony.
Blue Chalcedony is composed of tiny fibers that create the "Tyndall effect" that gives it its blue color. It is also known as "ribboned chalcedony".
Lemon-green Chromiferous Chalcedony owes its color to the presence of chromium. Not to be confused with Chrysoprase (similar in appearance), which gets its color from the nickel in its composition.
Blue-green copper chalcedony has copper inclusions. It is also known as "Blue Chrysoprase".
Pink Chalcedony contains manganese. It is also known as "lavender quartz". You can also find it on the page dedicated to pink gemstones.
Dark green plasma chalcedony contains ferrosilicate inclusions.
Red Chalcedony owes its color to the presence of iron oxide in its composition. It is also known as "sanguine chalcedony".
Blue lace chalcedony is characterized by lighter or darker white bands on a blue background, the famous "lace effect". Its blue color is due to layers of copper, manganese and iron in its structure.
