EarthMineralogy of Dolomite
Dolomite takes its name from the French geologist Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu, who studied it in the 18th century.
Dolomite is a double carbonate of calcium and magnesium, with the chemical formula CaMg(CO₃)₂.
It is extracted from sedimentary rocks known as dolomites. It is formed mainly by dolomitization, a geological process in which magnesium replaces calcium in limestone rocks.
It crystallizes in the trigonal system and has a hardness of 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale - it's not a very hard stone and care must be taken not to scratch it.
Its colors range from white to gray, pink and brown.
