Dumortierite is formed from magma rich in silicic acid and boric acid. It is a basic aluminum borosilicate containing small amounts of iron and manganese - which give it its colors. It can be blue, blue-white, gray-brown or reddish-brown.
Its crystal system is rhombic - but it rarely forms prismatic crystals and is most often found as massive aggregates.
It is a fairly hard stone on the Mohs scale: 7
The history of Dumortiérite
Dumortiérite was officially discovered in 1881 by a French geologist. It was named after the paleontologist Eugène Dumortier.
It is used industrially for ceramic insulators and laboratory equipment. Its magnificent shades of blue, which blend perfectly with various metal alloys, have enabled this stone to carve out a place for itself in jewelry, notably in the manufacture of watch dials.
