Mineralogy of Fire Agate
Fire agate is a variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz composed mainly of SiO₂.
Its composition and consist of very thin layers of iron oxides, which account for its iridescence due to optical interference; alternating layers of silica and iron and cause light to diffract (Schiller effect).
The crystal system of fire agate is trigonal (quartz) and (moganite). It can occur in various color variations, which depend on the thickness of the iron oxide layers: thus, darker or lighter shades of brown, red, and orange may predominate, with green, blue, gold, or violet iridescence. Its appearance ranges from a waxy to a vitreous luster, and from translucent to opaque.
The rock formed in successive layers within cavities in volcanic environments rich in hydrothermal deposits during the Tertiary period, using waters rich and silica and iron oxides.
Its hardness is 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale—it is a hard stone.
