Mineralogy of Tiger's Eye

Tiger's Eye is a variety of microcrystalline quartz—part of the chalcedony family. Through pseudomorphism, silica (SiO₂) gradually replaces the fibers of crocidolite, a fibrous amphibole rich in iron. This process preserves the original fibrous structure, creating the stone's characteristic iridescence.

This iron-bearing silicon dioxide (with traces of aluminum, sodium, and magnesium) displays magnificent shimmering yellow, brown, and golden hues. It is found in the form of broad, fibrous veins of quartz, never as crystals.

Its trigonal crystal system is derived from quartz.

Its hardness is 7 on the Mohs scale, and its density is 2.64–2.71.

Its main deposits are located in South Africa (Northern Cape) and Australia (Hamersley Range).
