The history of Garnet
The name Garnet comes from the Latin malum granatum, meaning pomegranate, and the names of the different varieties are often given in honor of those who officially discovered them.
In Antiquity, the names of red pomegranates were " charbon ardent" and in the Middle Ages " escarboucle".
It's a stone that has always been famous the world over and is the stuff of many tales.
Garnet was used as early as 4,000 years ago by the Sumerians. Its high hardness enabled them to cut other, softer stones. It was also ground into powder for sanding. These uses of garnet are still employed today, notably for precision cutting.
The Vikings attributed to garnet the power to guide the dead to Valhalla, their paradise where they could finally drink with the gods. This stone was very much in evidence at their funeral ceremonies.
Celts, Arabs, Egyptians, American Indians and Asian tribes set garnets on their shields to give themselves strength and courage and used the stone to make a wide range of jewelry, often used as a talisman.
For certain Amerindian tribes, garnet was used to see what was hidden, for the Arabs it was a symbol of sincerity and was worn by rulers, the Greeks used it to improve their night vision, the Egyptians associated it with the war goddess Sekhmet and the Romans used it to mark the seals of important documents.
In the Middle Ages, Garnet was said to protect against imprisonment. It was also common to make sword pommels set with Garnet to bring protection and courage to the owner.
In 1892, the Hunzas used garnet projectiles against British troops in Kashmir, believing that the blood-red color of garnet would be more lethal than lead bullets.
In the Swiss Alps, garnet has long been considered a woman's stone and was sewn into many traditional costumes.
A birthstone for people born in January, garnet is widely used in jewelry. Cut into facets, the beauty of its dark-red and pinkish-red is revealed.
