Hessonite garnet in mineralogy

Hessonite garnet is a variety of grossular garnet. It is a and silicate containing iron and aluminum. It is the iron that gives it its honey-yellow to orange-brown color. It forms in lime silicate rock, marble or skarn.

Hessonite garnet deposits are found in Mexico, Russia, Sri Lanka, Canada, Namibia and Italy.
Its "honey" appearance is due to the many evenly distributed micro-inclusions that make this garnet translucent. Garnet is also made up of numerous microfissures and cracks, which explains why gem-quality garnets cut for jewelry are usually small or counterfeit.

Did you know?

The more ferrous iron hessonite garnet contains, the darker brown it will tend to be. On the other hand, if ferric iron predominates in its composition, it will take on a lighter and brighter hue.

The history of Hessonite garnet

Its name comes from the Greek hêsson, meaning inferior, in connection with its lower hardness and density than other garnets (it is the calcium present in its composition that makes it softer). Its color has earned it the nickname "Cinnamon Stone".

It is particularly prized in its gem form in jewelry, where it is often faceted. Transparent varieties are highly sought-after.

Garnet hessonite and legend

In Vedic astrology, the talisman that protects against Rahu's demonic influences is a Hessonite garnet.
