The Iron-Eye in mineralogy
Iron-Eye is a rock composed of hematite, red jasper and tiger's-eye strata. It was formed 2-3 billion years ago by a process of metamorphic crushing of quartz- and limonite-rich sediments. Its folded band structure and hardness are due to tectonic movements and the high heat and pressure the rock underwent during the metamorphic process.
Iron-Eye is found mainly in Australia and South Africa in the form of large rocks.
Did you know?
In its raw state, Iron-Eye is a dull rust color, as its surface is covered with iron oxide due to erosion. The alternating layers of shimmering gold of Tiger's Eye, red of Jasper and brilliance of Hematite are revealed by polishing.
The Iron-Eye story
The history of the Iron-Eye is poorly documented, but it seems that Roman warriors used it, along with the Tiger-Eye, for strength and courage in battle.
In the West, it has been a highly prized gemstone for jewelry and decoration for around 2 centuries. Today, it is highly appreciated in lithotherapy for its stimulating properties, both physically and mentally.
