Known as the "Stone of Atlantis", the "Dolphin Stone" or the "Dominican Turquoise", Larimar comes from the world's only known deposit, located in the Dominican Republic.

Very recent origins

Although discovered in 1916 by a priest who didn't obtain permission to mine the difficult-to-reach mountain ore, the Larimar deposit was only exploited from 1974 onwards thanks to 2 inhabitants of the village of Chupaderos, who noticed the blue stone in the river and found the deposit by going upstream. One of them, Miguel Mendes, became the mine's owner and named the stone after his daughter: Lari Larissa and mar mer.

Despite its relatively high price, Larimar soon became a great success in jewelry and lithotherapy.

Larimar mineralogy

Larimar is a very rare variety of blue pectolite, found only in the Dominican Republic, notably in the province of Barahona.

Hydrothermally formed in volcanic cavities, the stone replaces calcium with copper, which gives it its characteristic color.

It consists of calcium, sodium, silicon, phosphorus and water oxides, with traces of copper, manganese, aluminum and potassium.

Larimar is difficult to extract, and access to its mountain mines is limited.

Its hardness varies: between 4.5 and 7 on the Mohs scale. It is a stone to be handled with care.
