Mahogany Obsidian is a glassy volcanic rock formed by the rapid cooling of silica-rich lava.
It's composed mainly of silicon dioxide, with inclusions of magnetite or hematite, the latter giving it its characteristic brownish-red hues.
It is a natural, amorphous glass - it has no crystalline structure. Its hardness on the Mohs scale is between 5 and 5.5: the stone is relatively fragile and brittle.
It is found in active or ancient volcanic regions, such as Mexico, Japan, the United States, Turkey, Italy and Iceland.
