Oncolith in mineralogy, composition and formation

Oncolite forms in marine or lake waters, first on the surface before sinking and continuing its formation in shallow water.

On average, this rock is 50% limestone and 50% oncoids (the ovoid zones clearly visible in Oncolithes) trapped within the limestone. Oncoids are formed by superimposing layers of different elements (in this case, concentric algae layers and interlocking clay-limestone layers) around a core, usually the remains of a living organism (shellfish) or a mineral (limestone fragment).

Its name literally means "nodule stone", from the Greek onkos - tumor/nodule and lithos - stone.

Did you know?

Oncolithe has two misleading nicknames:

Quail's egg Jasper , which is not a Jasper at all.
And Leopardite , which should not be confused with Leopard Jasper, the nickname for Rhyolite.
