It is a magmatic rock composed mainly of plagioclase, amphibole and minerals such as hornblende and pyroxene. Its intermittent and repeated crystallization in magma has created its characteristic orbicular patterns.
Its spheroids are often between 2.5 and 5 cm in diameter.

Its hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale makes it a rather hard and resistant stone.
