Mineralogy of Peridot
This is a variety rich in magnesium (more specifically, ferrous magnesium silicate) of the olivine mineral called forsterite.
Peridot has an orthorhombic crystal system. Its olive green to yellowish green color is due to the presence of iron in the crystal structure.
It forms in magnesium-rich igneous rocks, particularly peridotites, or may originate from mantle rocks brought to the surface by volcanoes.
Its main deposits are found and Pakistan (particularly Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), China, Egypt (Zabargad), the United States and .
The absence of quartz is a prerequisite for the formation of peridot, as this mineral can only exist in ultrabasic rocks that are low in silica, where quartz cannot form: too much silica and will disappear in favor of pyroxene.
