Symbols of Pyrite

Its name derives from the Greek word *pyr* (“fire”) and the sparks it produces when struck against metal or flint. Nodules found in ancient burial sites indicate that it was used as far back as prehistoric times to start fires.

In ancient Greece, pyrite was mentioned by Theophrastus and , who recommended it specifically for “preventing blood putrefaction.”
In the Middle Ages, drawing on Greek and traditions, its deceptive resemblance to gold came to be seen as a symbol and illusion, vanity and false value.

But its sun-like brilliance and metallic and radiate intellectual vitality as an expression of inner strength.
In crystal healing, pyrite is a stone that supports mental clarity and protection. By bringing clarity to emotions, its properties symbolize a clear, organized, and mind.

Stone of the Month for August

Although pyrite is not a traditional birthstone, its symbolic qualities nevertheless link it to the month of August: its golden metallic luster makes it a solar stone associated with warm and vitality—qualities traditionally linked to Leo, the zodiac sign for August.

Meanings and of Pyrite

Thus, its density, its luminous brilliance, and its natural structure—composed and cubes, octahedrons, and dodecahedrons—make pyrite a symbol of a vitalized spirit that clearly influences both itself and the world and matter.

By fostering a sense of security, this support can stimulate the inner strength necessary for intellectual activity—its expression through memory, analysis and . This exercise of reason will help build self-confidence and unlock and potential.

Day by day

Pyrite can be an excellent stone for starting or energizing a project. The iron and cubic crystal structure provide the framework that channels the “fire” energy released by the sulfur. It fosters a sense of organization, clarifies priorities, and grounds projects in reality. It is a constructive and stone that does not tolerate procrastination, and help and stay focused on your goals without getting sidetracked.

When paired with fluorite, it can be a welcome companion during exam preparation, for any intellectual or physical work, or when facing academic challenges.

The lead in your mind turns to gold. It’s as if, like a star, it invites you to transform yourself and shine. When you feel that your lead is too heavy, let pyrite brighten your day and your thoughts.

The iron present in pyrite and to help reduce anemia and improve blood oxygenation.

How to use Pyrite?

On your desk, to help you stay organized and stimulate and your creativity. On your child’s desk, to help them with their homework.

In a place where you want to symbolize the element of fire.

Which stones should be paired with pyrite in crystal healing?

To enhance its mental or protective properties, pyrite is often paired with stones and that amplify its effects. Depending on the desired benefits:

Important note: The hardness of pyrite and association with other minerals

Pyrite has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Among the stones we recommend pairing it with, it can scratch Fluorite (4) or Hematite (5 to 6.5). It can be scratched by Citrine (7) and Tiger’s and (7). Handle your stones with care!

Reload and clean

How do you cleanse pyrite?

Soft sunlight / form waves (Flower of Life or sacred geometries) / smudging (sage, palo santo, or incense) / on a cluster or geode of quartz or amethyst / singing bowl, Tibetan bells, or tuning fork
Treatments to avoid
Avoid water - Pyrite can oxidize and when exposed to moisture / Moisture accelerates oxidation / Impact: the stone is brittle.

Mineralogy of Pyrite

Pyrite is an iron sulfide with the chemical formula FeS₂. Composed of iron disulfide (iron and ), pyrite—which forms only in the absence of oxygen—is the most abundant sulfide in the Earth’s crust.

Its crystal system is cubic, and occurs naturally in the form of cubes (striated or unstriated), octahedrons, dodecahedrons, and .

It has a metallic, lustrous sheen, with a color tending toward brass-yellow, and may exhibit dark iridescence. Its fracture is irregular to conchoidal.

It forms in a wide variety of geological settings, such as hydrothermal deposits, sedimentary rocks, metal-bearing veins, black shales, coal, and .

In the 18th and centuries, it was used as a flint; in the 20th century, it was used as a wave detector in radio receivers.

Its density is approximately 5 g/cm³, and hardness is 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale.
