Pietersite is a variety of chalcedony (SiO₂), a microcrystalline quartz containing amphibole fibers (most often weathered crocidolite), which give it its iridescence.
Over time, the fibrous quartz fragments have fused together, creating breccias and swirling and . The stone can be blue-gray, reddish-brown, or golden yellow, depending on the proportion and of the fibers.
