Mineralogy of Prehnite
Prehnite belongs to the silicate class—it is a calcium and inosilicate with the formula Ca₂Al(AlSi₃O₁₀)(OH)₂.
Its crystal system is orthorhombic, with distinct cleavage on {001} and vitreous to pearly luster. Its habit can be globular, kidney-shaped, or stalactitic.
Prehnite can be colorless, gray, white, yellow, yellow-green, pale green, soft green, or water-green.
Its UV fluorescence ranges from blue-white to peach under short-wavelength UV light, and to yellow under long-wavelength UV light.
A hydrothermal mineral, its deposits form in the fissures of basic volcanic rocks, as well as in the cracks of the Alps and in certain copper deposits.
It is found in South Africa, Morocco, the United States (Lake Superior), Australia, and European Alps.
