La Septaria: History and mineralogy

Septaria was formed tens of millions of years ago on the ocean floor. It is composed of sedimentary rocks of clay and limestone and its cavities are filled with yellow, white or grey calcite (sometimes other minerals are also present, such as aragonite, celestite, dolomite and fossils).

Its name comes from the Latin separare, meaning to separate, because its structure is firmer than that of its parent rock and, being less sensitive to erosion, it separates from it very easily.

In Roman times, it was used in construction to make quality cement. In 1796, James Parker filed a patent for this cement, which stood out for its solidity and was used for many constructions in the 19ᵉ century.
