Thulite is a manganiferous zoïsite of the sorosilicate class. It is composed of silicon, oxygen, calcium, manganese, barium, chromium, iron, magnesium and strontium and contains molecules of mesosilicates and oxide ions. Its pink color comes from manganese.
It forms when manganese rocks are converted to silicate rocks by contact metamorphism. Water and high pressure are essential for its formation.
Its name, derived from the Norwegian island of Thule, was given in 1823, when the only known Thulite deposits were in Norway. For the Germanic peoples, the island of Thule symbolized the northern limit of the world.
Thulite on the market today comes from Australia, the USA and Norway.
